Boatboy and Oh My Dog!

Review by Paul Preston

Welcome to Today I Watched…, a series of posts documenting my new challenge – watch a movie a day for the rest of my life. Keep coming back to TheMovieGuys.net to find out what I watch each day…and get my take on it.

When I see a movie that’s a new release in theaters or for home viewing, I’ll give it a proper review in the “Reviews”, otherwise, I’ll write about it here.

April 25, 2017 – Boatboy

BoatboyI had this film recommended by a fellow Movie Guy, but it didn’t quite hit the mark with me. The plot, as self-described by the movie, is “a man wants to buy a boat and meets with a mysterious boat seller”. Unfortunately, what ensues is not interesting enough to warrant a completely unsatisfying ending. And Gustav, the “man” who wants to buy a boat in BoatBOY, is really, really, really dumb. But I try not to go on when it’s a short, these are movies just trying to get by. Spend $100 Million and you’ll hear about it, so on to the next.

April 26, 2017 – Oh My Dog!

Oh My Dog!Oh My Dog! is the stop motion animation stepchild to The Triplets of Belleville. Director Chloé Alliez charmed the socks off of me for six and a half minutes with this short film about dogs in a talent contest. The dogs, the people watching, everyone is quirky and weird (just the right quirky and weird, like in Belleville (although this short never goes dark, like in Belleville)). I pretty much just gave you the whole, largely wordless plot, so the entertainment is in the details – there’s a prissy dog, a goofball dog, who has an over-the-top stage mom in the audience, and a poop joke that’s actually entertaining (take note – EVERY OTHER ANIMATION COMPANY ON THE PLANET). See this at once. Here, I’ll help:
