It’s hard to believe anything bad could be said about Peter Jackson’s upcoming “Hobbit” films, but apparently ten minutes of footage that debuted at Las Vegas’ CinemaCon this week wasn’t greeted with the love an admiration the first three Tolkein films were. Apparently it’s because of technology trying to catch up to ambition. Jackson is shooting at 48 frames per second, twice the speed of a normal film’s frame rate. After Gary Ross couldn’t do it, they went with “I Am Legend” and “Water for Elephants” director Francis Lawrence, who looks here like Frederick Zoller of “Inglourious Basterds”. He seems like a good successor to us, ’cause “The Hunger Games” kinda played out like part “I Am Legend” and part “Water for Elephants”.

Certainly an odd choice to begin with for Mel, whose anti-Semitic rants have been well documented. Director Robert Rodriguez says they were waiting for just the right material to one-up the original. I’ve always thought “Sin City” was one of Rodriguez’s best films, rarely slipping into the excess that bogs down some of his work. A return to this world is good in my book.

The ratings board is up Harvey Weinstein’s ass again. First of all, let me say that almost 100% of the time, The Movie Guys are gonna side with a movie in any argument. And so it is with the decision by the MPAA to give the documentary “Bully” an R rating. Weinstein is standing up against the decision, a decision that would keep the film from playing to teens for whom it would be most effective. It’s a doc showing bullies in schools, and yes they use rough language. So do bullies in schools. Harvey is a true mogul and will no doubt go down as a legend for his hands-on involvement with his films, and he should! He fought (and won) for “Blue Valentine”‘s R rating, he fought (and lost) for “The King’s Speech”‘s PG-13 (it’s ridiculous that that film is rated R), and I hope he wins here so the film can be the most powerful it can be. Go get ‘em.

One of the stranger videos to come out in the last ten years is that creepy-voiced guy doing a CRAZY-thorough analysis of “Star Wars, Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace”. Right in nearly everything he says, and hilarious nearly every time he tries to be, this is a good series of videos to revisit on the eve of the original prequel’s re-release.
