Tommy Wiseau was out and about at Comic-Con, and answered questions about “The Room” being converted to 3D. He talked about more in this article, but the idea of finally using 3D technology for what it was designed – horrible, talky relationship dramas with few sets – caught my eye.

Earlier this year, here in THE LATEST, we reported that the original MST3K gang was back doing their show, but now it’s live, sans robots and called Cinematic Titanic. Turns out the MST3K-ers NOT involved in Cinematic Titanic have put together RIFFTRAX, where they provide audio tracks to movies that you can listen to at home when you watch the original movie. The trick here is they’ve expanded to current films like “The Lord of the Rings” and “Avatar”, whereas Cinematic Titanic sticks to the classic, crap films they’ve always goofed on. I’m so glad there’s room in the world for both.

To recap:
Joel Hodgson, Trace Beaulieu, Frank Conniff and Mary Jo Pehl are involved in Cinematic Titanic, traveling to L.A. in Sept. and their whole schedule is here.
Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett are involved in RiffTrax. Read a Slant Magazine article here.

Mail Online is reporting that a man robbed a bank in New York dressed as Darth Vader. Best part of the article?

“Police in New York are now trying to trace the phantom menace”

The Sith Lord thief was described as “wearing the distinctive Darth Vader mask, a long black cloak and – slightly out of character – camouflage combat trousers.” Which means that soon he’ll be posing for photos in front of Grauman’s Chinese Theater, or slightly worse, the recently-booted-from-Hollywood-Blvd. costume characters will be getting firearms in their on-going desperate need for attention…

The title of this Heat Vision article is “Two more join Martin Scorsese’s 3D family adventure ‘Hugo Cabret’ (exclusive)”. Emily Mortimer and Michael Stuhlbarg are the two actors in question.

Marvel releases a new Thor photo, and a Shakespearean Actor/Director does some pre-emptive soul-selling!

Today on MTV’s Splash Page, Marvel Studios released this image of lead actors Chris Hemsworth (as Thor), Tom Hiddleston (as Thor’s mischievous half-brother, Loki), and Sir Anthony Hopkins (as the Asgardian All-Father, Odin) in costume together for the first time, which is all kinds of awesome:

What’s less awesome is…the remainder of the article, in which Marvel trots out Thor director (and walking embodiment of amazingocity) Kenneth Branagh AND next year’s Captain America: the First Avenger director Joe Johnston to expound the virtues of… (wait for it) …POST-PRODUCTION 2D-TO-3D CONVERSION…

EDWARD NORTON OFFICIALLY OUT OF THE AVENGERS: MARVEL STUDIOS’ ANNOUNCEMENT & THE NORTON CAMP’S RESPONSE

UPDATED!! 7:50 P.M. EDT
Norton himself has now weighed in on the recasting of The Hulk via his Facebook page.

This past Friday, Drew McWeeny (neé AICN’s “Hercules”) broke the story on his HitFlix blog that Marvel Studios was opting not to invite Edward Norton back to reprise his Incredible Hulk role as Bruce Banner in the upcoming Avengers film. This came as a bit of a shock, considering that Norton had mentioned his ongoing enthusiasm for returning to the role several times in recent interviews.

Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige (pictured above with Norton on the set of the 2008 Incredible Hulk film) gave a rather pointed statement regarding the casting change to HitFlix, explaining the company’s reasoning:

“We have made the decision to not bring Ed Norton back to portray the title role of Bruce Banner in The Avengers. Our decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members. The Avengers demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble, as evidenced by Robert [Downey Jr. as Iron Man], Chris [Helmsworth as Thor], Chris [Evans as Captain America], Sam [Jackson as Nick Fury], Scarlett [Johansson as Black Widow], and all of our talented casts. We are looking to announce a name actor who fulfills these requirements, and is passionate about the iconic role in the coming weeks.”

Ouch. Norton rep Brian Swardstrom wasted no time in responding with some details that might surprise you about exactly how close Norton seemed to joining the ensemble. Perhaps most interesting is this little tidbit:

“When I said that Edward was definitely open to this idea, Kevin was very excited and we agreed that Edward should meet with Joss Whedon to discuss the project. Edward and Joss had a very good meeting (confirmed by Feige to me) at which Edward said he was enthusiastic at the prospect of being a part of the ensemble cast.”

Gee, kids; that sounds like actual confirmation that Joss Whedon is indeed helming The Avengers, doesn’t it? Regardless, we can all expect Marvel to trot out the director and stars of the film during Comic-Con at the end of the month.

A DVD recommendation from our Movie Guy Justin to pass time on a slow new-release weekend:

Triangle (2009)

There isn’t any way to write a review of this movie without giving important info away (even the trailer tells you too much). So, I will simply say, it is a cerebral, suspenseful, and intriguing indie that delivers again and again. What you need to know…it is a horror film that isn’t too full of gore; rather, it centers more on story, than startles.

If you liked “Ghost Ship”, then DON’T see this movie. If you liked “Memento” AND you like horror, then SEE this movie.

IN A WORLD DESPERATE FOR REVOLUTION, ONE CHIMPANZEE WILL RISE

“Sweet!  Lancelot Link is back?!?!”

Unfortunately, no. However, /Film has news about 20th-Century Fox’s Summer 2011 release of Rise of the Apes, a prequel to the Planet of the Apes storyline.

Now, before those of you who (like me) still struggle to get the skunk-stench of Tim Burton’s 2001 “reimagining” of POTA out of their nostrils automatically roll their eyes at this…

“Are you the guy who wrote this f@#$ing script?!?!”

…some aspects of the production sound promising:

-The majority of the simian characters will supposedly be created digitally, which would be worrying, except they are being produced by WETA Digital, whose work is pretty much unparalleled in creating photo-realistic creatures and animals, so that’s potentially cool.

-The cast (as of today) includes:

  • James Franco (the Spider-Man series, Pineapple Express, General Hospital) as a young scientist on the brink of an Alzheimer’s cure using various primates as test subjects (naughty, naughty, Jimmy!)
  • John Lithgow (Dexter, 3rd Rock from the Sun, Footloose, and The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai: Across the 8th Dimension, ’cause anytime you have the chance to mention that flick, you’ve just gotta take it) as Franco’s father who, you guessed it, suffers from Alzheimer’s
  • Slumdog Millionaire‘s Freida Pinto as the primatologist/obligatory love interest working with Franco
  • and one of my favorite character actors, Don Cheadle (Hotel Rwanda, the updated Ocean’s [insert number here] series, Iron Man 2), in a role that hasn’t been defined yet

The linked update adds to the coolness of the casting by bringing Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings‘ Gollum, the 2005 King Kong) back to WETA’s mo-cap studio, performing the chimpanzee, Caesar, whose origin is the focus of the film.

When I started writing this entry for “The Latest”, it quickly degenerated from a factual blurb to a bit of a rambly-rant-thingy about Planet of the Apes, the complete text of which I’ll post later on, over in the “Opinions/Articles” section, for anyone with an axe to grind over the way the legacy of original film series has been squandered in recent years. Otherwise, hit the link for /Film‘s story, and their other headlines about the film as well.

SCOTT PILGRIM DIRECTOR EDGAR WRIGHT MOVING FORWARD WITH MARVEL’S ANT-MAN FEATURE

I’ve been a Wright fanboy since I first saw his freakishly awesome series Spaced, co-written by and starring frequent Wright collaborators Simon Pegg and Jessica Hynes (neé Stevenson, both pictured above with Wright), on BBC America some years back. Since then, Wright’s two features, Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz have helped cement his status as “ONE OF US!! ONE OF US!!” in the movie-geek community; his upcoming adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s BRILLIANT series of Scott Pilgrim graphic novels is arguably the film I’m personally most excited to see this summer.

So, it’s a real kick that his next project following Pilgrim is the big-screen debut of Marvel’s Ant-Man, the screenplay with which he’s been tinkering for a few years. Despite early reports that Wright’s Ant-Man would be more of a send-up of the recent crop of superhero films, MTV’s Splash Page quoted Wright as saying “…it’s a genre film. It’s about the level of comedy that Iron Man has. The idea is to make a high-concept genre film where it’s within another genre.” Wright also expressed a clear desire to keep the film just as grounded in the real world as the other Marvel films.

Man…I hate when studio BS screws movie fans…

Variety reported this afternoon that Gillermo Del Toro has dropped out of his directing gig on The Hobbit “due to the ongoing delays in getting the films greenlit.”

From the variety story: Del Toro made the surprise announcement Sunday on The One Ring web site, adding that he will continue to co-write the screenplays based on J.R.R Tolkien’s “The Hobbit.”

“In light of ongoing delays in the setting of a start date for filming ‘The Hobbit,’ I am faced with the hardest decision of my life”, Del Toro said in a statement. “After nearly two years of living, breathing and designing a world as rich as Tolkien’s Middle Earth, I must, with great regret, take leave from helming these wonderful pictures.”

MGM has owned the rights to The Hobbit since 1969, and until their recent financial struggles (which also KO’d the next Bond film from getting started) had the financing deal worked out with New Line Cinema (the studio that produced and distributed The Lord of the Rings, in case you’ve been living in a sports town for the last decade and don’t know what a Hobbit is…).

This. BLOWS. Del Toro is the perfect guy to direct this (yes, I know it’s “these”, since the plan is to make two films: one to cover The Hobbit, the other to serve as linking narrative to The Fellowship of the Ring, but I’m not even banking on one getting made now, much less two…) if Peter Jackson’s not going to.

Note to New Line: if and when this finally comes around, you are ABSOLUTELY FORBIDDEN from allowing Michael Bay, Brett Ratner, or Joel Schumacher ANYWHERE NEAR IT, do I make myself clear?!

Sigh. Hit the link at the top of the post for Variety’s report, and click here to head over to TheOneRing.net and read the whole depressing story…

J.J. Abrams is just a bastard. A lucky, lucky bastard. The guy catches his first real break writing the screenplay for the Harrison Ford “I’m-gonna-take-my-shot-at-an-Oscar-by-playing-a-crippled-guy” movie Regarding Henry, so there’s an informal Star Wars connection. Alias let him play around with the spy genre for FIVE YEARS. Today, The Hollywood Reporter broke the story that he’s developing a heist flick with Field of Dreams and Sneakers Writer/Director Phil Alden Robinson?!?!

As if the folks at Pixar don’t already own a sizeable hunk of all the coolness in the universe, Story Artist Josh Cooley puts together a series of original pieces for an upcoming book called…wait for it…Lil’ Inappropriate Golden Book: Movies R Fun.

The book includes references ranging from The Godfather to The Professional (okay, maybe that’s not such a huge range…) to Terminator 2: Judgment Day (that one’s for you, Paul!).

Head on over to /Film for more info and images from the project. Too cool.

At the risk of beating this Empire Strikes Back anniversary thing to death, it’s a moral imperative that I, as not only a movie geek but one who teaches literature to teenagers, share this BRILLIANT article by Marc Bernardin over at io9. It’s like he took a snapshot of 7 year-old me’s reaction to it then, and made a time-lapse film of every thought I’ve had about it since. Wild. Awesome and wild.

MAY 20, 2010

As part of The Empire Strikes Back‘s 30th anniversary coverage, Rick Panna over at Crave Online posted this geektastic article about a recently-leaked, Leigh Brackett-written, pre-Lawrence Kasdan-doctored first draft of the Empire screenplay, when it was still simply titled “Star Wars Sequel”. Some really cool ideas in there that would have made for a WAY different film from the one we love. Hit the link above to check it out.

The first viral images from J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg’s upcoming Super 8 have hit the ‘net.

Given how freakin’ sweet the viral marketing was for Cloverfield (and, to be honest, how many additional layers it added to the story if you read through the content before seeing the film), I’m all kinds of jazzed to have it start up for Super 8. As far as I’m concerned, Abrams can do no wrong. His track record for innovative, character-driven drama (whether he was at the helm himself, or represented by another Bad Roboteer) pretty much speaks for itself.

Head over to movieviral.com for more coolness.

The 30th anniversary of my personal favorite movie of all time, The Empire Strikes Back, is Thursday, 5/20, and the official Star Wars site has been posting neat, rare goodies for a while now to celebrate.

Today’s update on SW.com actually comes from Maxim Magazine’s May issue (holy alliteration!); although not necessarily the type of photos you might expect Maxim to publish (guess we’ll have to wait for Jedi‘s anniversary in 2013 for those, nudge-nudge), there are a half-dozen cool behind-the-scenes pics from Empire to dig on.

Check them out HERE.

Too little, too late, Shia. But WELL SAID. It’s hard to believe over $700 million in ticket sales worldwide is a failure, but it WAS! INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL was a MASSIVE FAILURE. Next time, stop it when you’re in the middle of shooting it…

This is a letter from George Lucas to the creators of “Lost”. Not a joke.

“Congratulations on pulling off an amazing show. Don’t tell anyone … but when ‘Star Wars’ first came out, I didn’t know where it was going either. The trick is to pretend you’ve planned the whole thing out in advance. Throw in some father issues and references to other stories — let’s call them homages — and you’ve got a series.
In six seasons, you’ve managed to span both time and space, and I don’t think I’m alone in saying that I never saw what was around the corner. Now that it’s all coming to an end, it’s impressive to see how much was planned out in advance and how neatly you’ve wrapped up everything. You’ve created something really special. I’m sad that the series is ending, but I look forward to seeing what you two are going to do next.”

Wow.

While it’s unfortunate that Bryan Singer’s existing commitments prevented him from directing Fox’s soon-to-be-in-production X-Men: First Class, I think that they picked a Kick-Ass replacement for him: Matthew Vaughn.

Kinda funny co-inky-dink that Vaughn was the original choice to direct Marvel’s upcoming Thor adaptation (now in the way-capable hands of actor/director/Shakespeare-wrangler Kenneth Branagh), and both X-Men: First Class and Thor are due out in the same summer…

Pretty impressive cast of comics – Chris Kattan, David Spade, Chris Parnell, Kevin and his brothere John Farley, Horatio Sanz, and Norm MacDonald, pulling off the best, weirdest performance as Sid, a porno director who is just ODD. Sort of a mix between John Huston and Garrison Keillor, if everything either of them ever said ended in a perversion! Behold! The first time The Movie Guys have linked to Oprah.com.

Roger Ebert is the greatest film critic I’ve had the pleasure to watch and read for well over twenty years. The SIZE of his body of work is staggering. You can keep Kael, Reed and Schickel. Ebert brought intelligence and wit to his reviews and managed to make them palatable for all audiences. Despite a thyroid cancer that took his lower jaw and voice, his writing today is as immense and potent as ever.

It’s good to see Roger take advantage of an amazing technology that scoured over his TV reviews from the last twenty years, pulled words and uses them to formulate audible sentences for him via Stephen Hawking. Except, because of the exhaustive research, the computerized voice SOUNDS like Ebert!

It’s pretty cool. Watch Roger’s new voice at work at the link below.
